Red scarf girl (setting)

In the story "Red scarf girl" Ji-li is very cautious and very sensitive to her environment after she finds out she is included in the black category, which is the class status that was bourgeious and totally contrary to Chairman Mao's teachings and laws. But however because a conflict between her and the environment shes surrounded with it also affects her in where she is; the setting. For an example Ji-li is not safe in her own house because of her grandfather's political status influences, she has a lot of insecure issues. in page 132 it says "At first we could not hear much. Then we heard more: doors slamming, a cry from Hua-hua, crash after crash of dishes breaking overhead, and the indistinct voices of the Red Guards." This quote explains that Ji-Li is not in a safe environment. An even more relevant example is almost to the end of the book on page 253 the content a character called thin face slaps Ji-li's grandma on the face. Now this is one
setting another setting is in her school. At her primary school she wasn't very happy because every student new that she was in a bad political status, and all of them criticized her for that. But then when she moved into junior high school everything changed her self esteem rose up because none of the students really new her background, it was a fresh new start. The school and her house are the two main settings that influence her.

Red scarf girl (Theme)

The theme in the story "Red scarf girl" is about how China changes over time, and how the changes in the country affects the people. For example in the beginning of the story people try to break down shops and other buildings that express the four olds, which are old customs that need to be destroyed and made different. But I think it is too strict because no one could have alot of glamorous clothes, jewelry or other things that could be considered as a fourold. That is why victoms argue alot of about this issue. They get caught by the red guards who check people's houses making sure that they don't have any material that represent fourolds, and even if you where something thats a little tight they consider it as a fourold. Most of these ideas come from the citizens, I think that Chairman Mao just said you should go by new customs, but the people made it even more strict by thinking that tight clothes are apart of fourolds, or saying certain old words are fourolds. This law has influenced alot of chinese people and in my opinion I don't think it is a very good thing at all.

Red scarf girl (characterization)

In the story "Red scarf girl" the main character Ji-Li Jiang has a very strict comittment to abide by the rules of Chairman Mao which affects her feelings to her friends, family, and herself. An example is when Song Po Po leaves she says that it is a good thing that she is leaving because it isn't exploiting her, if I were her I would be really sad and wouldn't event think of the four olds. And because of the four olds she becomes angry with herself, when Ji-Li couldn't be a re successor it was because her grandfather was a landlord that made an internal conflict with herself because her friends started to not like her and she becomes very depressed.

The double black diamond

This has been quite recent and not as brave than someone who took a risk and saved someone's life, but brave enough to be encouraged. Well the story was in a ski resort in muju, the trip was accompanied by the dorm so my R.A, Mr. Eric came along too. I have learned how to ski for about 2 years so I was kind of bored by the low sloped mountains, so I went to the highest mountain(double black diamond) with Mr. Eric. At first I thought 'It's not gonna be a big deal' but when the lift took almost 10 minutes and saw the people falling down the immensley high mountain I was quite afraid. But still I wasn't that amazed by the slope until I phisically saw it with my own eyes I said to myself "What have I put myself into?!" Yes it was high enough that you could only hear the swishing of the cold dry winds and high enough you coudn't see the end of the slope. But still if I didn't get down their I would have probably been discouraged, so I tok the courage and went down the slope at first very slowly. Because it was so high up all the snow turned into ice and my ski's couldn't really turn as well on the snow and that was when I had slipped and fell down for the first time when I started to get good at skiing. The slope was so high and slippery that when I fell down i kept on sliding down it, after about sliding 30 meters I tried to get up and that was when Mr. Eric fell down too. We both got up and started to head down again. The winds were so strong it looked like a blizzard raging in your eyes. but down to the point where there were more people around I was comfortable skiing at a great speed. And finally for skiing about 30 minutes I came down to the end of the slope. Meanwhile Mr. Eric fell down again so it took him about 5 minutes more. I was quite proud of myself of taking the courage and going on it rather than not attempting to go on it. And I feel thankful for my mom because if she didn't send me to ski camp I wouldn't even went on the ski trip. THis will probably be a memory for all my life.
